経済主体が社会的地位に関心を持っている(社会的地位選好を持つ)ことの所得分配と経済成長への含意を理論的に分析した。社会的地位選好の存在は、各主体の効用関数が社会平均に対する相対所得(相対人的資本)に依存するという形で表される。各経済主体は「平均所得が上昇したときに自身の所得を増加させる意欲がわくタイプ」(keeping up with the Joneses、以下ではKUJとよぶ)か、もしくは「平均所得が下落したときに自身の所得を増加させる意欲がわくタイプ」(running away from the Joneses、以下ではRAJとよぶ)に分類されるが、本研究では特に、KUJの性質を持つ主体とRAJの性質を持つ主体が経済に混在する場合についての分析を行い、以下の結果が得られた。1.所得不平等が時間を通じて拡大するか縮小するか、あるいは所得不平等度は長期的にどの程度の大きさになるかといったことは、各主体のKUJ・RAJの性質の度合いに加えて、それぞれの主体の人口の構成比にも依存する。特に、KUJ主体の存在が相対的に大きい経済では、長期的に所得不平等が固定化される可能性がある。2.KUJの主体が地位願望の強度(競争心)を増加させた場合、短期には経済成長は促進されるものの、長期的には成長率は減少してしまう。この現象はRAJの主体の地位願望の強度が増加していない場合に発生する。従って、例えば一部の所得上位層のみの競争心(学歴志向など)を煽ったりしても、経済全体の生産性に対しては逆効果となってしまう可能性があることになる。3.経済成長率の上昇と共に所得不平等が拡大するか縮小するかは、KUJ、 RAJ主体のどちらが所得上位層を占めているかに依存する。例えば、所得上位層を占める主体がRAJの性質を持っているならば、長期の成長率上昇と共に所得不平等は拡大する。
