ヨーロッパを中心とする中央アジア探検隊が、中国新彊ウイグル自治区トルファン〜トゥムシュクにかけての西域北道より将来したトカラ語文書の言語学的・文献学的研究の方法論の習得、並びにフランス所蔵トカラ語文書の調査・記述を行うために」研究指導の委託により、2006年4月1日〜2008年3月31日の期間、フランス国立高等学術研究院(EPHE)・Georges-Jean PINAULT教授の指導の下、フランスにて、研究を行った。トカラ語は、インド語経由で、仏教を受容する以前、イラン文化の圧倒的影響下にあり、また、後には、古代ウイグルと接触したため、トカラ語文書の研究には、イラン系諸言語を主とした、シルクロードの様々な文献言語、及び印欧語比較言語学の知識が不可欠であり、それらの習得にも努めた。一方、以前から準備してきた、ドイッ所蔵トカラ語文書の既公表分ついて、索引を完成させ、フランス所蔵トカラ語文書の調査を、現在、進行中である。また、同時に、中央アジア仏教史の中で、トカラ語仏典を位置づける作業を進めており、特に、律典を中心にして、この問題を検討している。トカラ語による律典は、各国所蔵の文書が、部分的に調査・公表されてきたが、これらの文書を、インド〜中国という仏教伝播の流れの中で、総体的に検討し、位置づける作業は、これまで行われておらず、検討すべき、重要な課題として、残されたままになっている。この問題の解決には、トカラ語仏典に見られる律典関係の文書を、網羅的に収集し、サンスクリット・パーリ・漢訳仏典などと比較を行う必要がある。今年度は、トカラ語文書のうち、各国所蔵の未公表文書の調査を行った。この作業は、来年には、終了する予定であり、その成果については、以後、論文として、公表する。
