高応力の岩盤内に間隙水が存在すると、間隙水圧や応力の変化に対し、地震活動が敏感に反応する。その詳細を至近距離で観察するために、南アフリカのERPM鉱山とBuffelsfontein鉱山において、地下2~3kmの水没境界から数十m以内の非水没域から、地震・歪・地下水圧・自然電位などの項目について、岩盤挙動の観測を行った。インドの水没鉱山については、インドから研究者を招聘し、今後の進め方について議論した。
