本研究は台湾鉄器時代研究に関する研究史と現状における諸問題を検討して、墓地構造・親族関係・抜歯風習・首狩りの分析から台湾先史時代の社会構造の解明を目的としたものである。従来の研究が発掘資料の分類と文化同定および周辺地域との関係に終始していたことに対して、考古学的方法と人骨情報を駆使した墓地分析を行い、歯冠計測値を用いた親族関係の分析、抜歯の同定と分析、加工下顎骨を用いた首狩りの推定など、近年の日本考古学界において発達を遂げた方法を用いて、台湾先史時代の社会構造に迫ろうとしたものである。分析結果に基づき、墓地内の被葬者は群をなして埋葬されており、歯冠計測値を用いた血縁者推定の結果、その群は「親族集団」を反映していることが実証された。加えて、成人と子供の埋葬の差異、副葬品の性差、埋葬姿勢、埋葬方位、孤立埋葬、遺棄など様々な葬送風習を明らかにした。さらに現代人の婚後居住モデル仮説に基づいて婚後居住規定の検証を行い、石橋遺跡は父系に傾いた双系社会であったという結果を得た。また、抜歯風習における儀礼機能仮説を検討した結果、成人抜歯と婚姻抜歯の双方の可能性が残された。そして、鉄器時代蔦松文化遺跡出土の穿孔下顎骨が儀礼的首狩り行為の所産であり、東南アジア・台湾地域の民族誌に見られる儀礼的首狩り行為が先史時代まで遡るという結果を得ている。さらに、台湾鉄器時代蔦松文化における親族関係と諸儀礼行為の検討を行い、社会構造の復元と親族関係と諸儀礼の関係のモデル化を試みている。具体的には、抜歯風習における女性偏重、出産がメンバーシップ獲得の要件であることが、父系に傾いた社会における女性へのプレッシャーの発露の可能性を想起させるものであり、一方で首狩り行為という男性中心に行われた儀礼的行為の存在は、男性の役割の強調・ソダリティーに対する責務の増加を示している可能性等を提示している。
