近年、SARSの発生や現行のH5NI型トリインフルエンザの流行が世界中の注目を集め、その結果、感染症の流行が人間の健康に及ぼす脅威についての認識が高まっている。感染症から社会を守るには、監視や対策に携わる専門家ができるだけ早い段階で意思決定ができるよう、支援ツールを提供する必要がある。当グループは、Web上のニュースソースを利用した感染症の監視と追跡に焦点をおき、テキストマイニング技術を用いてニュース記事内の重要な箇所を特定する手法について研究している。この若手(A)のプロジェクトでは、世界で実際に発生している感染症の動的な側面を理解するのに不可欠な、「地名」の意味について研究を行った。このプロジェクトの成果物は以下の通りである。1.知識ソースの構築。(1)英語、タイ語、ベトナム語、日本語のニュース記事各500件の用語アノテーションおよび関連性アノテーション(2)世界の国名や行政区分など、地名の地理的な分類。2.テキストマイニングシステムへの、地名を理解するためのアルゴリズムの統合。3.Google mapを利用したGlobalHealth Monitor(生物地理情報インターフェース)の開発。現時点で、アメリカやアジア太平洋地域から、一ケ月あたり3000のユーザが訪問している。生物地理情報インターフェースでは、感染症がWeb上で報告された直後から、ユーザが社会的・地理的な文脈に沿った形で発生状況を閲覧することができる。また、情報を病名、日付の範囲、症状や文書のタイプなどによって絞り込むことや、リンクをたどって学術論文や外部のオントロジーなど、より深い知識を提供しているソースに移動することも可能である。また、Google Earthのユーザの向けのデータストリームも提供している。
