親潮域の動物プランクトンの多くは春季珪藻ブルームに依存して再生産・成長するが、餌環境変動が動物プランクトン個体群に与える影響の詳細は不明である。本研究はカイアシ類Eucalanus bungiiの休眠覚醒・産卵・卵孵化に体内蓄積脂質の代謝と摂餌による珪藻由来の必須脂肪酸摂取が重要な要因であることを示し、珪藻ブルームのタイミングと規模が本種の再生産の鍵を握っていることを示した。
