大気中酸素濃度を高精度で計測し二酸化炭素濃度と組み合わせて解析することにより、陸上生物圏と海洋による人為起源二酸化炭素の吸収量を見積もることができる。本研究では、これまで酸素濃度の高精度測定例が無かった上部対流圏や成層圏においても観測を実施し、その時空間変動を明らかにした。観測結果を用いて1993-2008年の人為起源二酸化炭素収支の解析を行った。また、成層圏における大気主要成分の重力分離効果を初めて捉えることに成功した。
