植物細胞・組織の長期保存におけるガラス化と生存性との関係を明らかにした.組織細胞の液体窒素保存時の応答および水の挙動,熱分析などの基礎的な知見を得て,論理的かつ成功的な植物遺伝資源保存を可能にする手法'ドロップレット'法を開発した.この方法により普及可能な操作で多様な絶滅危惧植物遺伝資源を高い生存率で保存することが可能になった.
