隋代仏教は、中国仏教史上の大きな転回点と評され、仏典注釈の流行と急速な教学形成が特色としてあげられるが、それは単に、先行するインドの学説を包含した新将来仏典のインパクトによってなされたのではなく、中国仏教の状況に応じた特有の課題が、当時の仏教界で提起・整理され、共通認識されていたことが要因であることを、その時代の人物・著作類を一括して研究対象とする同時代的視座から解明した。
