言語が異なる民族同士の場合、非言語コミュニケーション手段が重要となる。例えば、国際貿易港では来航船を交易商人と海賊・敵国艦隊とで区別する必要があり、船旗や船装などの視覚情報が重要な役割を果たしたと考えられる。本研究では、このような視覚情報を多く含む絵画史料、特に港市(=国際貿易港、portcity)を描いた絵画史料の分析をおこない、東アジア史のなかで異文化交流における非言語コミュニケーションの役割について検討した。まず港市関係の絵画資料を、スキャナーなどを用いてデジタル画像データベースとして構築するとともに、デジタル画像の拡大など加工処理による分析を可能とした。次に、近世日本の代表的港市である鹿児島や長崎などで活動した海運商の記録類を調査し、港市という異文化交流の場における地域社会のあり方について考察した。以上のデジタルデータベースや史料調査の結果を踏まえ、絵画史料の分析および検討をおこなった。特に絵画史料に描かれた港市・那覇の風景を読み解くことで、非言語コミュニケーションのあり方について検討した。唐船の入港の様相を屏風図で確認すると、入港前に号砲を放ち、船旗を掲揚していることがわかる。号砲は「音」によって唐船の来航を告げるための信号としての役割を果たし、船旗は視覚による情報伝達の役割を果たしていた。号砲と船旗による情報伝達は、琉球だけの制度ではなく、長崎や鹿児島など16世紀〜19世紀の東アジア海域や港市ではよく用いられる方法であった。これらの研究結果については、5th International Conference on Okinawan Studies "Imagined Okinawa : challenger from Time and Space" (Venice)において報告した。
