ローマ元首政期の西アジアは,文化的中心であるギリシア本土と,政治的中心であるローマ帝国中央との狭間に位置した。このような文化的政治的周縁性ゆえに,西アジア出身の元老院議員やギリシア知識人たちは,ギリシアとローマ双方への帰属意識を有し,帝国中央とギリシア文化とを結びつけることとなった。このような状況が,西ローマ帝国滅亡後も,東部が「ローマ帝国」として存続する文化的根拠を生み出していったのである。
