昨年度神道政治連盟国会議員懇談会のメンバーとのインタビューを通じて得られた情報の比較の対象として日本国会議員ほぼ全員(600人以上)にアンケートを郵送した。120人からの回答を得た。また、アメリカ合衆国におけるキリスト教系ロビーと政治の関係について情報を収集するためにシカゴで行われたアメリカ政治学会研究大会に出席した。そこで、アメリカの学者と研究の打ち合わせもできた。その結果、これまで見てきた3つの民主主義国家において宗教と政治の関係には強さの点で差があることが分かった。現在、両者の間に最も強い関係が存在しているのはアメリカであり、最も弱いのはフランスである。日本はその間の強さを見せている。しかし、強さの点で差があるものの、その関係の本質は同じだという結論に至った。したがって現代民主主義国家における政治と宗教の関係モデルの構築が可能であると思われる。そのモデルの論理的展開の要約は次の通りである:1.元来宗教と政治は一体であった。2.超越性との親しさは権力に結びつき、また、権力と共に発生する服従にも繋がる。そして超越の経験を共有することは社会の構成員の絆を強化するものである。政治家はそれらの事実を無自覚だが認識している。3.それと平行して近代国家において統一的な国民感情を創造するあるいは、維持するために市民宗教が形成される。4.ところで宗教は本質的に保守的である。5.その理由で多数派の宗教は自然に保守政党の味方になる。6.更に宗教の伝統に対する強い執着は宗教団体の国家主義的な立場に繋がる可能性が高い。7.そのためイデオロギーの面で重なる部分の多い保守政党は多数派の宗教団体に好意的になる。8.しかしながらそのイデオロギーの寄り沿いは保守政党にとって完全に非打算的なものではない。なぜなら、更に保守的になった社会の構成員は、選挙の時に自然にその政党に投票するからだ。
