本研究では、北極氷河後退域における土壌内有機炭素の分解に関する温暖化の影響を調べるため、化石炭素(fossil organic carbon)の分布と分解に関する研究を行った。その結果、土壌表層の有機炭素の放射性炭素年代は、800-34,510年とfossil organic carbonの割合が多く、表層から得られた微生物の細胞膜脂質の14C年代も、640-17,070 yrs BPとなり、土壌微生物によるfossil organic carbonの分解を示唆する結果を得た。
