The layered cobalt dioxide (ACoO_2) system exhibits a variety of fascinating physical phenomena, i.e. unconventional transport properties, long-range antiferromagnetic order, and superconductivity with absorbed water. In order to better understand the nature of this system, we have completed its phase diagram as a function of the Co valence, by means of muon-spin spectroscopy, which is sensitive to local magnetic environments. Particularly, we demonstrated the metallic nature for CoO_2, in contrast to the theoretical prediction that CoO_2 is an insulator.
