In Japan studies of Northern Irish fiction are much less popular than those of Northern Irish poetry and drama. I have studied Northern Irish fiction including George A.Birmingham and Glenn Patterson and revealed its universal significance and value. Though Birmingham's comical novels tend to be regarded as shallow and meaningless, the fact is that they show with deep Christian liberalism and love what is necessary to bring about reconciliation between human beings. While describing the local problem of conflicts between Nationalists and Unionists, Patterson's novels represent cosmopolitan characters of Northern Ireland.
