"Race" and Suffrage : An Analysis on the Historical Construction of Whiteness in American Democracy

本文从白人研究的角度考察19世纪的黑人选举权问题，旨在阐明美国民主制度中种族主义的根源。特别是，本研究关注自由州黑人选举权被剥夺的问题，并结合白人选举权问题来思考其原因。因此，这一现象清楚地表明，这是一种普遍的种族意识的表达，这种意识将选举权视为独立的象征，并试图使其成为“白人”的特权。

This study aims to clarify the origin of racism of American democracy by examining the black suffrage problem in the 19^<th> century from the point of the whiteness study. In particular, this study focuses on the disfranchisement of black suffrage in the free states and considers the reasons of it in relation to white suffrage problem. As a result, it is made clear that this phenomenon was an expression of popular racial consciousness that regarded suffrage as a symbol of independence and sought to make it the privilege of "white".
