本研究の目的は、古代ローマの養子制の分析を通じ、ローマ貴族家門の「家」意識のあり方を考察しようというものである。研究の結果、共和政末期以降、貴族家門を含む上層身分全体において、通常の養子縁組が後退し、「遺言による養子縁組」の形態が支配的となることが明らかとなった。「遺言による養子縁組」とは、正式の養子縁組ではなく、名前の継承を条件とする相続に他ならない。このことは、ローマにおいて全体として男系を通じた家門の継承意識が弱まっていったことを示す。
