日本の縄文文化の世界史的位置づけの理解をめざす準備として、東アジア各地、東南アジア、西アジア、ヨーロッパ、新大陸など世界各地におけるこれまでの研究成果を概観し、生業と主要な道具を中心に完新世前期の文化内容の基本的な特徴を比較した。西アジアや中国などの先進地域ほど完新世の始まりと農耕牧畜の始まりの間が短く、純粋な狩猟採集段階の文化内容が乏しく、農耕牧畜の出現が遅い地域ほど多彩な狩猟採集文化の発展がみられる。縄文文化はその代表である。このような成果の上に日本を含む考古学の時期区分の整理に関する提案を行った。
