地震時に地盤が液状化すると建物やタンクなどが沈下するが、単に沈下するだけでなく不同沈下を生じることもあり、この不同沈下の方が居住性などに影響する。過去の地震時における不同沈下の事例を調べたところ、隣接する建物の距離などが不同沈下量に影響を与えることが分かった。そこで、振動台および解析によって不同沈下に影響を与える要因を研究し、不同沈下量を予測する経験式を導き出した。これを東京のある地区に適用して建物群の不同沈下の被害推定を行った。
