グラム陰性病原細菌が宿主感染する際に、宿主の生体防御システムの攻撃により合成が誘導されるストレス誘導タンパク質群が病原性のコントロールを行うことを報告している。そこで、グラム陽性の病原細菌である連鎖球菌においても同様の機構が存在するかどうかを調べる為に、S. intermediusのストレス誘導型分子シャペロンDnaK 破壊株とストレス誘導型プロテアーゼの構成因子であるClpPペプチダーゼ破壊株を作製した。それら株を解析した結果、両破壊株とも温度感受性を示すこと、DnaK破壊株ではヒト培養細胞に対する細胞毒性が低下することを発見した。
