古墳出現期(庄内式期)に盛行する加飾壺およびその関連資料を、全国的に集成するとともに、形態や製作技術の観察に基づく型式学的検討や分布状況の分析を実施し、同資料の成立・展開過程を検討した。その結果、加飾壺の淵源を伊勢湾沿岸地域に求める近年の有力な見方とは異なり、加飾壺の成立や広域波及の中核を担ったのは近畿中部勢力であったとの結論に達した。同時に、加飾壺の展開をめぐる地域間の相互交流のあり方が明らかとなり、古墳祭祀の創出過程における地域関係の解明において重要な所見を得ることができた。
