複雑な技術体系を有する産業において、新規性の高い技術革新が必要とされる場合、企業間関係はどのように変化するのかについて、自動車排気浄化技術の開発を事例に考察した。これまでの研究ではタスクの不確実性に対応し、自動車メーカーは周辺技術の開発に取り組んでいたことが確認されているものの、なぜそのような意思決定に至ったのか、との問題はまだ解明されていないところがある。それに対して、本研究は自動車メーカーと部品メーカーとの分業関係に焦点を当て、資料分析とヒヤリング調査を中心に事例研究を行った。不確実性の高い技術開発に対して、自動車メーカーは社内で技術全体を理解できる内製R&D組織を構築していたことが示されている。こうした知識のマネジメント(企業間関係)は、そもそもモジュールなモジュラー型の技術集積ではなく、一つ一つが相互に密接に関係したアーキテクチャー重視の技術体系を持っている産業において重要とされている。一方では、技術の不確実性に対して、システムインテグレータはいかに認識し対応するか、企業間における学習プロセスの解明が今後の課題である。
