発達障害成人当事者の研究のこれまでは、主に著書を著している者や幼少期から支援を受けていた者を研究対象としていたが、これに当てはまらない成人後に診断を受けた発達障害当事者の現状に関する聞き取り調査を9名に行った。特にアスペルガー症候群の場合、幼少期の対人関係について幼少期から多くの困難さを抱えており、早期発見に至る可能性のあったエピソードが多く語られた。また同時にいじめられ体験も高い割合で認められた。二次障害と思われるエピソードについて2つのピークが存在していることが示唆された。1点目ピークは思春期前後における時期であり、不眠やうつ状態などが見られた。2点目のピークとして就労後に、自己の能力を超えるような仕事と直面した時であった。特に就労に関する二次障害の場合、現在の困りごとに関して発達障害の問題より経済的問題が優先事項となり、現実的問題に直面することが多く認められ、二次障害対策の重要性が示唆された。自己の感情認知の問題では、困難を示す結果が得られており、他者の心情理解と同時に、今後の支援のありかたとして自己感情認知の問題の重要性が示唆された。また彼らを支えるものとして重要であるのは認められ体験であり、これは他者から頼りにされたりほめられたりなどの経験によってもたらされるもの以外にも、宗教や思想などによってもたらされたものもあった。また自身の感情を認知することが困難だと語るものも多く、新たな知見としてこの点は重要であると考えられた。
