我が国の赤外線天文衛星「あかり」が2006年2月22日に打ち上げられ、2007年度中に本研究の観測対象である近傍楕円銀河の中間・遠赤外線観測を無事に完了した。また、米国赤外線天文衛星Spitzer衛星で、研究期間中に2回、観測提案が採択され、18個の近傍楕円銀河の中間赤外線分光観測を実施した。これら「あかり」とSpitzer衛星の中間・遠赤外線衛星データを解析し、楕円銀河の星間空間中に多くのダストが存在することを示した。とくに、有機物質の一つである多環芳香族炭化水素の存在を発見した。これらの発見によって、楕円銀河の進化に強い制限を与えることに成功した。
