海中にある土木構造物の基礎部材として多用される円柱基礎を対象に模型実験を行い, 周辺の渦流れや土砂の挙動および地盤面地形の変動過程を最新の計測技術を導入して詳しく調べた. さらに, 構造物周辺の水・土砂・地盤面の運動を精密に表す数式モデルを作成し, 様々な条件に対してシミュレーションを行った. その結果, 基礎周辺で発生する海底地盤の侵食(洗掘)のメカニズムを明らかにするとともに, 静的および動的な洗掘現象の発達過程の特徴を正確に再現可能な計算手法を開発することができた.
