多細胞動物の陸上化進化の一要因を発生過程の肺形成イベント獲得と捉え、その様な視点での研究対象となっていなかった冠輪動物について肺形成の発生メカニズム解明を目的に、軟体動物有肺類を用い研究を行った。有肺類のカラマツガイにおいて発生過程を観察するとともに、マウス等で気管形成に関与する遺伝子の単離を試みた。軟体動物を含む冠輪動物群における、肺形成の形態形成、遺伝子発現等の発生メカニズムの詳細な解析は、動物の陸上化適応についての統一的見解を示唆し得る重要な手掛かりを与えるだろう。
