本研究は、ラオスと限界集落化の危機に直面する日本の中山間地域の住民の互助体系について、考察し、互助の適用が可能であるかを検討するものである。平成24年度は、前年度から継続して、紀伊半島豪雨災害からの復興を目指して活動しているボランティアグループや個人ボランティアに聞き取り調査をおこなった。とくに、復興ツリーの設置を目指して募金活動をしているグループと、災害や復興の情報をインターネットを通じて提供している個人ボランティアの活動に着目し、詳細な活動内容を収集した。災害から一年半を経てボランティアとしての立ち位置を、これからどのように展開させればいいのか、さまざまな可能性を検討しつつ、現活動を維持していることが明らかになった。また、平成25年1月から2月まで、ラオス国ボーケオ県パクター郡のカム族の調査村に滞在し、参与観察を通じて相互扶助の実態について調査した。具体的には、破傷風に感染した患者家族がどのように治療費用を捻出し看病にあたっているかについて、親族や地元住民からインタビューをおこなった。その結果、昨年は見受けられなかったバンコクやチェンライへの労働移動による送金が、貴重な送金源になっていることが分かった。首都ビエンチャンへの出稼ぎはなだらかな減少傾向にあり、まずはチェンライで経験を積んだうえで、より高い賃金が期待されるバンコクへ親類や友人のつてを辿って移動しているということが明らかになった。
