本研究の第一の目的は、ミャンマーが民主化を実現させる中で、国家がどのような宗教政策をとり、国民統合を実現させようとしているのかについて明らかにすることであった。この点については、まずテインセイン政権が2015年に成立させた「民族保護法」の条文の分析を行うとともに、同法の制定に主導的な役割を果たした民族宗教保護協会においてその成立過程に関する調査を行った。次に、「民族保護法」は、現実には仏教徒の保護を目的として制定されたものであり、これをムスリムがどうとらえているのかという問題に関する聴き取りを行った。第二は、多様な民族的・宗教的背景を持つ人々が共生する社会を実現するためにはどのような関係を構築すべきか、といった問題に対する考察である。まずその前提となる現実を理解するため、民族間の日常的な関係についての調査を行った。具体的には、シャン州北部ナムサン郡を中心とする地域における山地民パラウンを対象とし、盆地のシャン族、平地のビルマ族の仏教実践を媒介とする関係について分析した。以上の研究は、民主化以降のミャンマーが新しい国家形成を進める際に、基礎的なデータとして参照されるだろう。第三に、タイの事例に基づいて構築された上座仏教徒社会モデルとは異なる、ミャンマーの地域に根ざした独自の実践を掘り起こすことである。これについては、ミャンマーのシャン州において、シャン族・パラウン族の在家信徒による仏典朗唱の実践に関する調査を行った。特に複数の専門家が同時に仏典を朗誦し、聴衆は好みに応じてそれを選択する実践形態は、先行研究でも報告されておらず、宗教実践における声と文字の関係に注目した研究を発展させる上で意義のある発見である。
