成長発育期の小児における睡眠障害の実態を解明し、顎関節症状、消化器症状、社会心理学的な問題行動などの種々の関連因子との相互関係を明らかにするため、小学校児童を対象に、消化器症状、日中の活動中の眠気、睡眠状態、問題行動について質問紙を用いた調査を行った。睡眠に異常を示す群(睡眠障害群)と正常群に分けたところ、小学校児童の一般集団において睡眠障害を訴える者は30%弱にのぼった。睡眠障害群では、授業中に眠くなる、日中にしっかりと起きていない、日中に疲れたと思うこと、イライラなどの行動的特徴、睡眠時にいびきをかく等に加え、食後におなかのあたりが気持ち悪い、げっぷなどの胃食道酸逆流の症状を示唆する項目、不安や攻撃性などの問題行動が見られた。また、問題行動に関する質問紙調査の結果から分けた問題行動群と正常群について、睡眠障害、胃食道逆流症状を比べたところ、問題行動群では正常群に比べて、睡眠障害と胃食道逆流症状が有意に多く認められた。
