The results of the questionnaire survey sent out to universities and other research institutes in Japan in this study indicated that 59.1% on average of top 100 research institutes and middle 100 research institutes in receiving the amount distributed of 2008 Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research were carrying out monitoring of articles, etc. reported by mass-media, suggesting that a majority of research institutes were doing monitoring. Based on this, it was found that each research institute was ready and was capable for quantitatively measuring the degree of part of outreach and demonstrated high feasibility. Then, the degree of outreach was actually indexed and trials used for evaluating research institutes were performed. Indexing the degree of outreach enabled us to mark the beginning of visualizing part of outreach activities of research institutes.

本研究向日本高校等科研院所发出的问卷调查结果显示，在获得2008年度科学研究助学金发放金额的前100名科研院所和排名第二的100名科研院所中，平均有59.1%的科研院所在对媒体报道的文章等进行监控，说明大多数科研院所都在进行监控。在此基础上，发现各研究所均已做好准备，有能力对部分外展程度进行量化测量，具有较高的可行性。然后，实际上对外展程度进行了索引，并进行了用于评估研究机构的试验。编制外联程度的索引使我们能够开始将研究机构的部分外联活动可视化。
