今年度は、ペルガモン王国の遺した遺物(美術品)について、集中的な研究を行った。第一に、8月にベルリンのペルガモン美術館を再訪し、ここに所蔵されている「ゼウスの大祭壇」に施されている浮彫の実見と写真撮影をおこなった。この王国がいかなる意図をもってこのような巨大な浮彫を造り、公衆の目に触れるところに展示したのかは、王国のおかれた国際的な立場や国王権力の大きさを表象していると考えられるが、そうした意義を深く追求かつ考察するためにも、まず実見が重要なのである。さらに平成19度の訪問した際に見られなかったペルガモン国王「アッタロス一世」の頭像も実見・撮影した。第二に、同じ調査旅行でローマ国立博物館所蔵の「妻を殺して自害するガリア人の首領像」、「アッタロス二世全身像」、またヴァティカン美術館に所蔵されている「ガリア人頭像」、「戦うペルシア人像」、カピトリーニ美術館所蔵の傑作「瀕死のガリア人像」、ナポリ国立考古学博物館に所蔵されている「エウメネス二世青銅頭像」、「フィレタイロス頭像」などペルガモン彫刻の傑作(あるいはその模刻像)を実見し撮影に成功した。第三に、J.J.Politt, Art in the Hellenistic Age, Cambridge, 1986(2008) ; F.Queyrel, L'autel de Pergame, Paris, 2005を始めとするヘレニズム時代の美術史(彫刻史)関係の著作を精読した。これらは古代東地中海世界のヘレニズム諸王国がおのれの政治権力を内外に広く知らしめる表彰として、神話世界における大征服物語に関する浮き彫りを施した巨大記念建築物を造りあげたことを詳述した著作で、ヘレニズム時代における一王国が戦乱の相次いだ時代をどのようにして生き抜いていったのかを考察する上で極めて重要な意義をもつものなのである。
