平成21年度は、カンボジアのラオ系クメール人村落における食事をめぐる生活実践が社会関係をどのように維持させるのか、あるいは揺るがすのかについて、他者評価やゴシップへの着目を通して考察することを目標とし、前年度に実施したカンボジアでのフィールドワークのデータ整理と分析を行った。食物交換や分配は、村人が日常生活を円滑に送るための重要な行為であり、相手と親愛し合っているか否か、あるいは気が合っているか否かといった社会関係の様態を不断に推測するバロメーターとなっている。食物の頻繁なやり取りがあると第三者による悪評から相手を擁護し、逆に、やり取りの中断は相手との関係悪化を再確認させ、悪評への加担につながる場合すらある。しかし重要なのは、関係の悪化において直接的対立は起こらず、ゴシップを流しながらも積極的な行為に出ず、関係の緊張が解れるのを待つという態度である。「だんまり」で「ただいるだけ」と表現されるそうした態度でやり過ごしながら、一定期間後に少しずつ食物のやり取りを再開させ、何の問題もなかったかのように平然とつきあうのである。本研究は、他者評価やゴシップに敏感な社会において、食物のやりとり・中断・再開といった行為が人間関係の状態を調整し、うまく生き抜く技法を提供していることを明示した。その技法は、カンボジアのラオ社会の生活実践の在り方の提示にとどまらず、現代日本社会において複雑な人間関係をどのように生きるかという我々の問題に手掛かりを与えてくれる点で意義深い。
