本研究は以下に示す三点を研究目的とする。第一に、過去30年～100年における世界全域の地域内、地域間の物質フローの推計を行い、そのデータベースを作成する。第二に、人日、各種経済指標などの物質フローを発生させているメカニズムを明らかにすることである。第三に、その情報を基に産業連関モデルを用いて、将来の物質フローの見通しを示すことである。物量単位のフロー量の把握のために、まず貨幣単位の世界社会会計表と貿易表を作成する。それらの貨幣単位の情報は、国民経済計算、工業統計、貿易統計、エネルギー統計等の各種国際統計情報を用いて推計した。そして、その貨幣単位情報を基にして、本研究の世界全域における経済勘定の構築とその経済勘定と整合的な物質勘定表の構築手法の開発を行った。本手法にはCross-entropy法を用いた。化石燃料をはじめとしたエネルギー財のフロー、食料・農業関連財、鉄のフローに対してその手法の適用を行った。その結果既往の統計に見られるいくつかの問題、すなわち統計間の矛盾、欠測、物量フローと金銭的フローの不整合、異常と思われる経年変化などの問題が修正され、信頼性の高いデータを作ることが可能となった。また、その信頼性の高いデータを用いて、全世界の過去30年間における物質フローを解析し、経済発展と物質フローの変化の関係を示した。具体的には経済発展の初期段階ではGDP当たりの物質フロー量は急激に増加するが、ある一定の経済水準(一人当たりGDPが1万ドル付近)を境にして、GDPあたりの物質フロー量は低下することが明らかとなった。
