项目摘要

今年度は主に四川地域の毘沙門天像の図像的な特徴を把握し、それを造立年代の編年の判定につなげることに目的を置いて研究を進めた。四川地域の作例は九世紀という一時期に集中的に造られたにもかかわらず、図像上の特徴や造像位置、造像サイズなどの面でそれぞれに相違点が多い。その地域的偏差・時代的偏差を正確にとらえるためには、この一世紀間にいかなる図像的展開や図像伝播がなされたかを考察する必要がある。したがって、今年度は四川地域の作例の網羅的な実地踏査を行い、既に調査を行っていた??、夾江、楽山、資中、内江、安岳等に加えて、四川北部の?中(大像山摩崖造像)、巴中(南龕)、通江(趙巧岩)の他、仁寿(牛角寨摩崖造像)や大足(北山仏耳岩)の作例調査を行った。その成果は、四川地域の毘沙門天像を網羅的に取り上げた論文で発表、従来未報告であった夾江県牛仙寺摩崖造像の作例など新資料の紹介も行った。当地域の毘沙門天信仰においては、四川のみならず唐朝にとっても南の門戸であった嘉州地域(楽山・夾江)の作例が重視されるべきであり、毘沙門天像が対吐蕃・南詔を明確に意識した鎮護国家を祈願する対象として造立されたという造像背景を顕著に示す事例であることが明らかになった。また、大足の作例には、約一世紀間の四川の毘沙門天図像の伝統とは異なる図像要素が採用されていることも明らかになり、四川地域における毘沙門天図像の展開史の重要な局面を明らかにできた。中国唐代において毘沙門天信仰の盛行した四川と甘粛地域との図像伝播の相互関係を考える上でも、こうした四川のスケールの確立は有効なものであると予想される。また一方で、南北朝時代より塔を捧持する毘沙門天の図像がおこなわれたが、この宝塔捧持の意味について考察を進めるために、南北朝期から隋唐代にかけての舎利信仰の展開と変容についても、主に文献テキストの収集・精読の方向から考察を進めた。
