项目摘要

2009年度は「研究指導の委託」により、英国ケンブリッジ大学ジャネノト・トッド教授の指導のもと、ウルストンクラフトを始めとする1790年代の女性作家及び書簡体文学研究に従事した。初のミーティングの折、トッド教授より「女性と書簡体文学」の歴史をひと通り学ぶ必要があることを指摘され、助言に従ってオウィティウスのHeroidesから17世紀のアフラ・ベーン、18世紀のポウプ、リチャードソン等を経て1790年代に至る書簡体文学の通史を集中して学び、同時にアルトマンやデリダの理論書を通じてこのジャンルの全体像を把握しようと試みた。この作業と並行して6月から7月にかけて英国内で3つの学会に参加し、ウルストンクラフトを始めとする「長い18世紀」の女性作家を専門とする各国の研究者との議輪を通じ、女性による手紙・書簡体文学について理解を深める。8月から9月にかけては近年発見されたウルストンクラフトの書簡を用いて公私の狭間を漂う彼女の'I'の意議の変遷をたどり、その成果を10月の'Romantic Explorations'学会(ドイツ、コブレンツ)で発表し、一定の評価を得た。11月から2010年1月にかけては18世紀後半の書簡体文学(特にゴシック小説)を研究し、ウルストンクラフトの遺作The Wrongs of Woman or Maria(1798)に現れるゴシック要素を従来とは異なる観点から指摘した論文を'Women and Gothic'学会(ケンブリッジ)で発表し、トッド教授を始め聴衆から盛んなフィードバックを得る。2月から3月にかけては上記の研究をふまえ、ウルストンクラフトの主要作品、A Vindication of the Rights of Men(1790)A Vindication of the Rights of Woman(1792), Letters from Sweden(1796), The Wrongs of Woman(1798)をそれぞれバーク、ルソー、イムレイ、ファニー・ウルストンクラフトを読み手に配したPublic Letterとして読み解くことで、手紙・書簡体作品を通じて類稀なる'I'の意識を構築したウルストンクラフトの著述家としての意義を明らかにする作業に入った。この成果は来年度以降、著作や学会発表等を通じ、広く公表していく予定である
