我が国における最初の実用的写真技術であった湿板写真術と鶏卵紙について、その詳細を研究し技術の復元再生を目指すため、幕末期の文献等を精査して湿板写真や鶏卵紙の技法の実験を行いその技術に習熟するとともに、2010年度には米国で専門家とともに実地研究を行いその技術を高めた。幕末明治期に各地で撮影された歴史的な写真に基づく再撮影については2008年度以降、ベアトや上野彦馬、内田九一、冨重利平らの撮影した写真に基づいた撮影を長崎、熊本、下関、伊勢、箱根、鎌倉、東京などで合計20ヶ所以上実施し、各写真家の撮影レンズの焦点距離など光学的諸条件の分析を行うとともに、近代化による景観の変化も考察した。
