A comparative study on the public archaeology between UK and Japan

在英国，“遗产”和“考古”这两个词已经逐渐进入公众想象的前沿，并在过去的半个世纪里与公众建立了丰富而多方面的关系。这种关系是在过去中产阶级普遍感兴趣的背景下，随着考古学的业余传统，与消费社会的出现一起发展起来的。相反，在日本，尽管有完善的考古遗产管理制度和许多教育活动和推广计划，“考古”尚未深入渗透到日本人的思想中。本研究通过比较英国和日本在“考古与社会”的结构和机制上的差异来阐明这种反差的原因。

In the United Kingdom, the terms 'heritage' and 'archaeology' have been gradually moving into forefront of public imagination, and have created a rich and multifaceted relationship with the public over the last half-century. This relationship grew from a background of general interest in the past on the part of the middle-class, along with the tradition of amateurism in archaeology, in tandem with the emergence of the consumer society. On the contrary, in Japan, despite a well-established archaeological heritage management system and a number of educational activities and outreach programs, 'kokogaku (archaeology)' has not yet infiltrated deeply into the Japanese mindset. This study clarifies the reasons for this contrast by comparing the differences in the structure and mechanism of 'archaeology and society' between UK and Japan.
