The Research and Development of a Curriculum based on the Nebuta Neputa Festivals of the Tsugaru Area

Every year a large number of residents of Aomori prefecture take part in the traditional Nebuta and Neputa festivals of the Tsugaru region.This research investigates how local schools and children are getting involved in these festivals, how schools and the local community cooperate and introduce a curriculum from which festival-related class-based activities in schools can be implemented.Research Areas: (1) The level of children's awareness of the festivals and the level of involvement of children in the festivals.The initiatives that schools are taking to include the festivals into the school curriculum.The level of awareness of the relationship between the festival organizers and schools.Observations of repeated visits to schools that actively partake in the festivals.The results of these enquiries are promising and indicate that there already exists a good environment for study of the festivals to be introduced into school curriculums.As a result an easy to use, general purpose "Daruma Nebuta" teaching plan has been developed for students of all ages and abilities.
