The Study of the Doctrines of Early Svatantrika Madhyamika School.

Previous scholars have understood the history of Indian Madhyamika school as a history of schism. This is due to having adopted without criticism the account of the Indian Buddhism relayed in Tibet. In this research project, I have paid particular attention to the thought of Bhaviveka, who was a scholar of early Svatantrika Madhyamika school. And, by comparing his thought with the accounts concerning it in the areas where Mahayana Buddhism spread, i.e., Tibet and East Asia, I clarified the contradictory points between the two. As a result, I ascertained that there were places where corrections are necessary regarding the past history of thought about Bhaviveka's doctrines.
