Identification of the novel phosphokinase for tau/alpha-synuclein and the mechanisms for protein accumulation in neurodegenerative diseases

Intracytoplasmic accumulation of α-synuclein (αS) phosphorylated at Ser129, which is the major component of Lewy bodies, has the pivotal impact on neuronal degeneration in brains of Parkinson's disease. By using neuroblastoma cells (3D5) overexpressing human αS, we clarified that αS aggregates were immunoreactive to synphilin-1, and that CK2 is the major phosphokinase of αS, and lysosomal impairment has the critical role on αS accumulation and aggregation.
