项目摘要

本研究の目的は、ドミニカ共和国(以下、ドミニカ)からアメリカに渡る野球選手を対象とし、彼らの移動経験とスポーツを介した国際移動の実態を民族誌的に記述することを通して、「野球移民」の背景にある近代スポーツ文化の「土着化」の過程を明らかにし、国際移民研究のなかに「野球移民」を位置づけることである。そこで、昨年度から継続中の(1)ドミニカ国内の野球システムについての実態調査(2)野球がどのように土着化しているのかを解明する(3)アメリカのドミニカ移民コミュニティにおける野球への関わりについての調査を実施した。(1)の調査では、昨年度に調査したベースボールアカデミーを退団した選手にインタビュー調査をおこない、アカデミー経験がどのような意味をもつのかについて聞き取りをおこなった。(2)に関しては、ひとつのコミュニティにおける参与観察から、野球が人々の日常生活や価値観を規制していることがあきらかとなった。また、(3)のアメリカでの移民コミュニティでおこなったインタビューならびに参与観察からは、移民社会において野球が祖国と移民をつなぐ役割をはたしている様相を観察することができた。これらの調査結果は、研究代表者が「野球移民」と呼ぶカテゴリーの実在性を、完成された選手送出システムとドミニカに根ざした野球の文化性の事例から実証可能であることを示している。先行研究が野球の伝播やスポーツ帝国主義の視点で論じてきたことで野球選手の移動とその背後にあるスポーツの文化性については見過ごされてきた。本研究がおこなった現地調査でのデータから、「野球移民」の背景にある野球文化があきらかになりつつある。これらの調査結果は、学会や研究フォーラムで随時発表をおこなっている。
