项目摘要

本研究は、多くのイネ在来品種が現存する東アフリカの農村において、それぞれの品種がもつ機能性を明らかにしながら、多様な品種が保持されてきたメカニズムを地域の生態、社会、文化の各側面から解明することを目的としている。平成21年度には、現地に長期滞在し参与観察を実施した。また、平成22年度には竹林の拡大と生業とのかかわりを明らかにする目的で、7月から10月にかけて現地調査を実施した。調査地域では、10程度の世帯が境を接して畑を開き、農繁期には共同で農作業をおこなう。この小集団は、村を中心として四方に点在している。この小集団内や隣接した小集団間では、種籾が頻繁に交換され栽培品種が共通する傾向がみられた。また、婚出などで、成員が離脱する際には、種籾が小集団間を移動することがある。この小集団の成員の構成は、かつては共食集団を核としたもので、成員の出入りの少ない安定した集団であったが、近年では、焼畑の移動にともない成員が離合集散するようになった。また、航空写真の分析から1978年と1990年の間に村の中心部で竹林が大きく拡大したことが明らかとなった。従来、タケの優占した林が開墾されることは、まれであったが、近年では若い世代を中心に、湿地に隣接した竹林を開墾して陸稲を栽培し、湿地で換金性に優れた水稲を栽培するという世帯が増加している。このことは親族を中心とした耕作地の小集団が離散する一つの要因となっている。これらの事例は、栽培品種の動態を考える際に、それを地域の生態的・社会的特性とその変容に注目することの妥当性を示すものである。耕作地の小集団と栽培品種の動態が示すパターンの記述には、生態学におけるメタ群集の概念が適用可能と考えられ、理論の構築を進めてゆきたい。
