大規模角化企業の組織論的研究を理論と実証の両面で行なってきた。とりわけ東芝と日立という2つの巨大な多角化企業がそれぞれどのようにその事業ポートフォリオを管理してきたのかという点に注目しながら、個別事業のレベルを超えた全社レベルでの組織の在り方について研究を積み重ねた。特に、日立製作所は個々の事業部や子会社レベルでのポートフォリオ管理が活発であるのに対して、東芝は全社レベルでのそれが活発であるなど、企業ごとに大きく事業再編と組織変革の方法が異なっている点を具体的に示すと共に、その背後にある理論的な問題に注意の焦点を移し、分析したことが平成22年度の研究成果であった。平成22年度は、4月に京都で行われた組織学会関西支部特別研究会で、Nils Brunsson先生(Stockholm School of Economics)の講演を聴講し、海外の研究動向等について情報収集を行った。具体的には、Meta-organization(組織の集合体としての組織)に関する発表を聴き、研究課題を遂行する上で、海外の研究者のグローバルな視点は大きな刺激となった。これらとRaymond Boudonの著作『The Unintended Consequences of Social Action』等を参照しながら、論文作成支援ソフトであるEndnoteを活用して基本文献のレビューを進めていき、日立と東芝に関する実証研究を理論化することに役立てた。
