広島に投下された原爆とその被害は世界中で知られてきた出来事である。この出来事に対して、日本政府、広島市行政、社会運動、マスコミなどの諸組織はしばしば言及し、様々な政策や活動を展開してきた。しかし、これまで原爆に関する社会科学的研究の多くは、こうした諸組織が持つ影響力についてあまり考慮に入れてこなかった。本研究の目的は、社会の諸組織によって提示される原爆に関する知識や言説あるいは表象が広島の原爆被爆者とその記憶にいかに介在し作用するかを調査し、両者の関係性を明らかにすることにある。上記のような目的に対して、平成22年度は、次のような二つの方向からアプローチした。ひとつには、広島における平和運動や被爆者運動の中で原爆に関する表象の形成について、初期のころよりこうした運動に関与してきた人びとの資料調査を実施した。これを通じて、後に「被爆体験の継承」として訴えられるような原爆被害に関する記録や資料の保存の先駆的運動、原爆ドームの保存がどのようにしてなされたのかが当時運動を展開していた人々の視点から垣間見ることができた。もうひとつは、アメリカにおいて在米原爆被爆者への聞き取りを実施し、彼らの記憶のあり方を探ることで、広島の原爆被爆者の記憶のあり方の理解を試みた。これまで在米被爆者に関して研究はあまりなされておらず、彼らの理解は記録としても意義深いといえよう。またアメリカでは、ラトガース大学ジェノサイド・紛争解決・人権の研究センターに滞在し、同センターに所属する研究者および大学院生と交流・議論する一方、これまでの研究の成果をラトガース大学や南オレゴン大学でレクチャーし、ピース・アンド・ジャスティス・スタディーズ学会において発表した。
