项目摘要

今年度は、資料・文献の整理と博士論文の執筆を中心にして研究を進めてきた。1.江戸時代に流通した主要善書47種を収集してきた(うち感応編13種、陰〓文・録23種、功過格11種)。これらの善書を系統付け、整理の作業に基づいて日本における印施形態に関する基礎的な考察を行った。2.江戸期儒者の著作から見る善書受容について、一つの特例として、広瀬淡窓を取り上げる。淡窓の思想の根底にある「敬天」と善書思想との関連、また『万善簿』の成立に至る経緯と『万善簿』の内容を中心に考察した。淡窓による功過格の実践、中江藤樹、貝原益軒と異なる受容のあり方を明らかにした。淡窓の善書思想の実践は敬天の道として、自己一身の行為のみならず、講学の場に「用意教人」との善行としてしばしば進行していることがわかる。3.書物関係以外、人の活動を注目し、勧善の倫理の構築と近世日本仏教のあり方をさらに解明する。とりわけ善書伝来に重要な役割を担いた黄檗宗の僧隠元・独湛等の活動をめぐって、龍谷大学所蔵無著道忠識『太上感応経』・『黄檗外記』・長崎関係史料を利用し、隠元等と妙心寺僧の交渉を分析する。明の禅風と文化がもたらす影響と善書思想の浸透との関係を浮き彫りにした。4.民衆教化における善書受容について、石門心学に目を配りながら、飢餓と施行をキーワードにして江戸期善書の位置づけを再検討した。天明・享保の飢饉による世相の動揺と不安を収めるため、民衆教化政策が重視されるようになった社会環境の中で発展する機会を得た心学は、その教勢の拡張と共に、善書を講舎で頒布していたが、これを呼応しているような形で下層知識人はさらに飢饉対策として善書を頒布し、善書に書かれた内容に従って善を進んでいた。飢饉を乗り切るための「善」の宣伝は、石門心学と仏教信者との間に共通するものが見出された。
