We performedthe experimentaland computational studies on the auditory systemwhich provides the basis of speech perception.1) Perception of size and shape from speech sounds: We found the size JNDs are almost the same for voiced and whispered speechand sufficiently small even for short sounds.2) Auditory filter characteristics and perception by hearing impaired and normal hearing:We proposed a new method to measure auditory filter selectivity and compression simultaneously. Wedeveloped a signal processing techniquetosimulatehearing impairment within a unified gammachirp framework.3) Functional MRI (fMRI) experiments:We studied the location of size processing in the auditory cortex.4) Modeling of speech perception and signal processing:We demonstrated the gammachirp filterbank outperformsconventional mel-frequencyfilterbanksin the task of vocal tract length estimation. We also improvedthe STRAIGHT systemfor speech experiments.
