A study on historical migrations of peoples in search of pearls, pearl shells and trepangs, and the dynamism of transnational relations

Focusing on the Arafura Sea area, we examined aspects of historical migrations of peoples across the sea in search of marine resources such as pearls, pearl shells and trepangs. We also studied the effects of the Pacific War as well as international relations among Japan, Australia and Indonesia on the movements of peoples and marine resources. Our research identified the geographic significance of the area, which is connected by the ocean to Japan, from the Meiji era to the present. We also have demonstrated effective approaches to area studies by re-examining the framework of national borders and have highlighted new perspectives and issues which can enhance the field of ocean area studies as it relates to interactions of people and the exchange of produce.
