We studied coding algorithms for images and videos based on vector quantization (VQ). Algorithms are useful for communication terminals for which not only the computational ability is small but also the communication band width is narrow. The developed algorithms make such communication terminals enable to transmit and to receive images and videos in real time. In previous studies, since we implemented VQ with variable block size for gray scale images, VQ for color images investigated in this project. Furthermore, VQ with variable block size was applied to video coding and its usefulness was confirmed in the project. A streaming technology for real time paly of videos is developing.

研究了基于矢量量化的图像和视频编码算法。算法对于不仅计算能力小而且通信带宽窄的通信终端是有用的。所开发的算法使得这样的通信终端能够真实的实时地发送和接收图像和视频。在以往的研究中，由于我们实现了可变块大小的灰度图像的矢量量化，矢量量化的彩色图像在这个项目中进行了研究。此外，可变块大小的VQ被应用于视频编码，并在项目中证实了其有效性。一种用于视频真实的实时播放的流媒体技术正在发展。
