China and Japan in the social sciences : Asian views, Western views. Towards a comprehension of the international field of Asian Studies

This research investigated the collaborations between Asian and Western researchers in the realm of human sciences, and the place of Asian Diaspora in the Western universities. It focused on the field of New Confucianism, a discipline created in the US by Asian and American scholars. The research reached several sets of results. First, it analyzed the make-up of the Asian academic Diaspora in the American universities. In terms of a sociological analysis of the production of knowledge in human sciences, secondly, it gained a better understanding of how researchers work together on a global level and of how the cultural origins of these researchers is involved in their scientific activity. Third, it showed how political events-such as the rise of China and Asia on a global scale-have impinged on the academic field.
