今年一年間の研究を通して、明らかになったのは以下のことである。まずフランス革命におけるフェデラリスムのディスクール分析を行う上で当然重要となる「フェデラリスム」という語そのものは、研究対象地域であるマルセイユの各革命勢力によっては、ほぼ使用されていない。「フェデラリスム」はマルセイユにとっては他者の言葉であった。次に、先行研究は、いわゆる「フェデラリストの反乱」を起こした諸セクション集会にとっての重要な理念は「人民主権」であるとしているため、諸セクションのみならず、対抗勢力であるクラブについても「人民主権」および「国民主権」の理念についての調査を行ったが、双方の勢力による語使用に顕著な差異を見出すことはできず、反乱を起こした諸セクションのみに「人民主権」の理念を負わせることは正当ではないことが明らかとなった。そこで、両勢力の地域意識を調査するために、「マルセイユ」、「マルセイユ人」、「パリ」、「パリ人」、「フランス」、「フランス人」の6つの語彙について、詳細に使用状況の調査を行った。その結果、地域主義は存在したが、それは即座に反乱に結びつくものではなかったことがわかった。現地で収集した一次史料の調査は以上であるが、この分析を導くにあたっては、既存の革命史研究が大いに参考になった。例えば、解説付きの国王裁判議論集は、人民への判決の委託、いわゆる「人民上訴」が、敵対勢力に抵抗するための戦術的方便であるという認識を与えてくれた。ゆえにマルセイユのジャコバン・クラブの、「人民上訴派」への態度は硬化したのである。また逆に、リン・ハントの『人権を創造する』からは、革命期には様々な対立がありながらも、各勢力は絶えず融和の道を探っていたことへの着想を得た。地方史を研究する上では、地方ごとの差異、中央との敵対、という側面が強調されがちであるが、共通点も踏まえて考察しなければ一面的なものになるのであり、そのような認識を導くのは常に様々な先人による諸研究の読解であることを改めて認識することができた。
